Why does dust affect asthma?
Fine dust particles irritate the airways of people with asthma or allergies, causing coughing, chest tightness and wheezing. The risk is higher for children, older adults and people with lung or heart disease.
Before the season
- See your doctor for a written asthma action plan: daily medicines, your reliever inhaler, and when to step up treatment or get help.
- Check your inhalers are in date and learn the correct technique, with a spacer if one is prescribed.
- Follow weather alerts from the National Center for Meteorology.
During a dust storm
- Stay indoors as much as possible with windows and doors closed.
- If you must go out, wear a suitable mask and keep it short.
- Always carry your reliever inhaler.
- Avoid outdoor exercise until the air clears.
After the storm
If you needed your reliever more than usual, see your doctor to review your treatment plan, and note your attacks and their dates to help them. Read when to call 997 and when to call 937.
