This article is for general awareness and is not medical advice or a substitute for evaluation by a qualified doctor. In an emergency in Saudi Arabia, call 997 immediately.
The four numbers in the test
- LDL ("bad") cholesterol: usually the most important number, because high levels over time are linked to plaque building up in the arteries.
- HDL ("good") cholesterol: helps carry cholesterol away from the arteries; higher is generally better.
- Triglycerides: strongly affected by sugars, starches, weight and fasting before the test.
- Total cholesterol: an approximate total that isn't enough on its own.
Why there is no single number for everyone
The right LDL target differs from person to person. Someone with diabetes, previous heart disease or a strong family history usually needs a lower target than a healthy person without risk factors. Your doctor first estimates your heart risk, then sets your target and decides whether you need treatment.
Before the test
- Ask whether you need to fast; some laboratories require it, especially if your triglycerides were high before.
- Tell your doctor about your medicines, as some affect the results.
Don't start or stop cholesterol medicines without your doctor. Sudden chest pain or shortness of breath is an emergency: call 997 immediately.
What usually helps
- Less saturated fat, fried food and sugar; more vegetables and fibre.
- Regular physical activity suited to your condition.
- Stopping smoking.
- Keeping blood pressure and blood sugar under control, as they add to heart risk. Read how to read your HbA1c result.
