1. Organise medicines
- Write a list of all medicines, doses and times, and review it with the doctor or pharmacist every few months.
- Use a weekly pill organiser divided by day and time.
- Watch for drug interactions when another doctor prescribes a new medicine.
2. Preventing falls
- Enough lighting at night, especially on the way to the bathroom.
- Grab bars and supports in the bathroom, and non-slip floors.
- Remove loose rugs and cables from walkways.
- Suitable footwear inside the home.
3. Nutrition and fluids
Older adults are more prone to dehydration, especially during the Saudi summer. Encourage regular water intake, balanced meals rich in protein and fibre, and keep track of their weight.
4. Medical visits
Before each visit, prepare a list of questions, the medicines, home readings such as blood pressure and blood sugar, and any change the family has noticed. It helps if the same person, who knows the patient's condition, accompanies them each time.
5. When do you need specialised home care?
- After surgery or a long hospital stay.
- When injections, dressings or a catheter are needed.
- When mobility is difficult or regular physiotherapy is needed.
