What is a CBC test?
A complete blood count measures the main components of your blood. It is ordered in routine checkups, for fatigue or infections, or before surgery. Normal ranges vary slightly between laboratories and by age and sex, so always compare your result with the range printed on your lab report.
Key indicators
- Hemoglobin (Hb): The protein that carries oxygen. A low level may indicate anemia.
- Red blood cells (RBC) and hematocrit (HCT): The number of red cells and the share of blood volume they make up.
- Mean corpuscular volume (MCV): Helps the doctor tell the type of anemia apart, such as iron or vitamin B12 deficiency.
- White blood cells (WBC): Immune cells. A high or low count has many possible causes, from infections to medications.
- Platelets (PLT): Responsible for clotting and stopping bleeding.
Why shouldn't you interpret the result on your own?
A single value outside the range does not necessarily mean disease; it may be due to dehydration, a minor infection, a medication, or differences between laboratories. Your doctor reads the result together with your symptoms, medical history, and previous results, and may order a repeat test or other investigations.
