When do check-ups start?
Contact your doctor or health centre as soon as your pregnancy is confirmed; the first visit is best in the early weeks. If you are planning a pregnancy, you can see your doctor beforehand to discuss folic acid and your current medicines.
A general visit schedule
The schedule depends on each pregnancy, but in an uncomplicated pregnancy it is usually a monthly visit until around the seventh month, then every two weeks, then weekly in the final weeks.
Usual tests
- At the start: blood group and Rh factor, complete blood count, blood sugar and other tests your doctor chooses.
- Ultrasound scans at set stages to confirm how far along you are and follow the baby's growth.
- Gestational diabetes screening, usually between weeks 24 and 28.
- Blood pressure and weight at every visit.
General tips
- Don't take any medicine or herbal remedy without advice; some are not safe in pregnancy.
- Bring your pregnancy file and results to every visit, especially if you are seen at more than one place. Read why keep a copy of your medical file.
- Prepare your questions before the visit. Read how to prepare for your doctor's appointment.
