Before the appointment: prepare your file
- Your symptoms: when they started, how often they happen, and what makes them worse or better. Write them down before the appointment so you don't forget anything.
- Current medications: name, dose and when you take them, including vitamins, supplements and herbal products.
- Previous tests and imaging: bring your latest results, especially if they are from another facility. Comparing them with older results helps the doctor a lot.
- Medical and family history: chronic conditions, previous surgeries, allergies, and important conditions in your family.
- Insurance and referral details: if the appointment needs an approval or a referral, check it in advance.
10 questions to ask your doctor
- What is the likely diagnosis? Are there other possibilities?
- Which tests do I need, and why? When will the results be ready?
- What treatment options are available? What are the benefits and risks of each?
- What happens if we wait, or don't treat now?
- How should I take the medicine? Which side effects should I watch for?
- Does the treatment interact with my current medications?
- Do I need to change my diet, activity or work?
- Which warning signs mean I should seek urgent care or go to the emergency department?
- When is my follow-up appointment? Who do I contact if my condition gets worse?
- Would a second medical opinion be useful in my case?
During the appointment
Start with the most important problem, and describe your symptoms honestly, even if they feel embarrassing. Ask the doctor to explain again if something isn't clear, and take notes or bring someone you trust to help you remember.
After the appointment: leave with a clear plan
Before you leave, make sure you know three things: what was decided, what your next step is, and who is responsible for it. If the decision is a big one, such as surgery or long-term treatment, you have the right to ask for a second medical opinion before you start.
