What is a second medical opinion?

A second medical opinion means another consultant reviews your diagnosis or proposed treatment plan, based on your reports and test results, to confirm the recommendation or suggest additional options. The aim is not to doubt your treating doctor, but to make sure the decision rests on the clearest possible picture. It is a common, accepted practice in health systems around the world.

When is a second opinion recommended?

In an emergency, do not delay treatment to seek a second opinion. A second opinion suits decisions that allow time for review.

Which documents do you need?

The more complete and organised your file, the more accurate and faster the second opinion. Prepare the following:

  1. Your latest medical reports and a case summary from your treating doctor.
  2. Laboratory results with their dates.
  3. Imaging studies and their reports (such as MRI or CT). Ideally get the images themselves, not just the report.
  4. Pathology reports, if any.
  5. Your current medications and doses, and any drug allergies.
  6. The proposed treatment plan as your doctor explained it.

Key questions to ask the consultant

If the two opinions differ

Differing medical opinions are normal, especially in complex cases. Discuss the difference calmly with your treating doctor and ask for the reasons behind each recommendation. In some cases it helps to have more than one expert review the case independently and then discuss the differences together to reach a documented decision. That is the idea behind HealTrip's “Decision room”.

How will HealTrip help?

HealTrip is building a Saudi platform that organises your medical file and connects you with accredited consultants to review your case, with a decision room where three experts independently review the evidence before the recommendation is documented. The platform is currently pre-launch and provides no medical services before licensing is complete. Explore the decision room.
