Why regular check-ups?
Conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol can stay silent for years. Regular check-ups find them early, when treatment is easier and less costly.
For adults in general
- Blood pressure, weight and waist measurement.
- A blood sugar test, such as fasting glucose or HbA1c, depending on age and risk factors.
- A lipid test every few years, or more often if you have risk factors.
- Keeping vaccinations up to date according to Ministry of Health recommendations.
- Regular dental and eye checks.
After forty and fifty
- Early detection screening for some cancers by sex and age, such as breast screening for women and bowel screening, following your doctor's advice and national programmes.
- Bone health assessment for some groups, especially women after menopause.
- Closer heart and kidney follow-up for people with diabetes or high blood pressure.
This list is general. Family history, smoking, pregnancy and chronic conditions can change which checks you need and when, and your doctor decides what suits you.
How to get the most from your check-up
- Bring your previous results for comparison. Read why keep a copy of your medical file.
- Write down your questions before the visit. Read how to prepare for your doctor's appointment.
- Ask when your next check-up is due before you leave.
