- When surgery for an enlarged prostate or prostate removal is recommended.
- After a raised PSA or a prostate cancer diagnosis where treatment or monitoring options differ.
- When a kidney or bladder tumour is found.
- With recurrent stones, or when surgery is recommended instead of lithotripsy.

Questions for the urologist
- Is active surveillance a suitable option for me?
- How do endoscopy, surgery and radiotherapy compare in results and side effects?
- How will treatment affect bladder control and sexual function?
- How can I reduce the chance of stones coming back?
Urological emergency signs
If you cannot pass urine at all, have severe flank pain with fever or chills, heavy blood in the urine with clots, or sudden severe testicular pain, go to the emergency department or call 997 immediately.
Frequently asked questions
Does every raised PSA mean prostate cancer?
No. It can rise with benign enlargement, inflammation or other causes; diagnosis needs a consultant's assessment and may require further tests.
Does every kidney stone need a procedure?
No. Many small stones pass on their own with monitoring; the decision depends on the stone's size and location, symptoms and kidney function.
Can imaging be reviewed remotely?
Usually yes, provided the original images are available in DICOM format together with the reports.
