When is a second opinion recommended in pediatrics?
- When surgery is recommended for your child, such as tonsillectomy, ear tubes or congenital heart surgery.
- After a diagnosis of a chronic condition such as type 1 diabetes, severe asthma or kidney disease.
- When developmental, speech delay or autism spectrum disorder is suspected.
- With repeated infections or hospital admissions without a clear explanation.
Documents you need
- Vaccination record and height and weight charts.
- Birth and early-months reports if there were complications.
- Recent test and imaging results, with the original images.
- Developmental or speech assessment reports, if any.
- Current medicines, doses and any known allergies.
Questions for the pediatrician
- Is surgery needed now, or can we wait and monitor?
- What non-surgical options suit my child's age?
- How will treatment affect growth, school and daily life?
- Which signs mean we should seek urgent care?
Warning signs in children
If your child has difficulty breathing, turns blue, has a seizure, is extremely drowsy and hard to wake, is under 3 months old with a fever, or shows signs of dehydration such as very little urine, go to the emergency department or call 997 immediately.
Frequently asked questions
Does every child with recurrent tonsillitis need surgery?
No. The decision depends on how often and how severe the episodes are and how they affect sleep and school; monitoring is enough in many cases.
When should speech delay be assessed?
If you notice a delay compared with peers, an early assessment is best, because early intervention often improves outcomes.
Can my child's case be reviewed without travelling?
In many cases reports and images can be reviewed remotely, but some conditions need an in-person clinical examination.
